Free Character Strengths Test
Positive psychology research by Martin Seligman and Christopher Peterson identified 24 universal character strengths that cluster into six virtues. These are not skills you practice — they're the qualities that show up most naturally, feel effortless, and energize you when you use them. When you're in environments that draw on your signature strengths regularly, you feel engaged and alive. This test (18 questions, 7 minutes) identifies your top strength and shows you its shadow side.

Research background
The VIA Classification of Character Strengths developed by Martin Seligman and Christopher Peterson is one of the most cited frameworks in positive psychology. Research shows that using signature strengths daily is associated with higher wellbeing, lower depression, and greater engagement — effects that persist over time. The framework has been studied in 190+ countries.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the same as the VIA Character Strengths Survey?
This test is based on the same six-virtue framework (Wisdom, Courage, Humanity, Justice, Temperance, Transcendence) but is an independent implementation integrated with your full Astra Mind profile. The original VIA Survey by Martin Seligman is available at viacharacter.org.
What's the difference between character strengths and skills?
Skills are learned; character strengths feel natural. Using a signature strength doesn't deplete you — it energizes you. When you have to work hard to produce a strength behavior, it may be a skill you've developed rather than a genuine character strength.
Can character strengths be developed?
Your signature strengths remain fairly stable, but lower-scoring strengths can be developed through deliberate practice. Research also shows that overusing your top strengths — applying them in the wrong context — is as common a problem as underusing them.
